5 Ice Cream Shops to Visit This Summer

Chicago consists of 77 different communities and neighborhoods, each having their own vibe, local shops, dining and sites to see. A great way to check out different neighborhoods this summer is find the local ice cream shop and enjoy a sweet treat while you explore a new community!

Favorite Neighborhood Ice Cream Shops

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams

The first stop on our list is Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams. Their Ice Cream Mission – “We are absolutely devoted to making better ice creams and bringing people together.” What a great thing to hear from your local ice cream shop!

Jeni’s has locations all over the United States, but the first Chicago shop is located on Southport in the Lakeview Neighborhood. Not only do they offer their incredible ice cream, but they partnered with Intelligentsia Coffee to feature the Black Cat Shake – a mixture of Sweet Cream ice cream and Black Cat espresso – sounds heavenly.

You can also grab a taste of Jeni’s at their two other locations in Chicago: Wicker Park and Lincoln Park. Click Here for more info.

Black Dog Gelato

Next on our list is Black Dog Gelato. Here the Gelato is made fresh on a daily basis, in small batches. You’ll find a constant display of new, exciting flavors that you won’t find anywhere else!

The original Black Dog Gelato shop is located in Ukrainian Village. The flavors change daily, so stop by often to see what’s new! You can also find Black Dog Gelato in Roscoe Village, the French Market downtown, or the Revival Food Hall. Click Here for more info.

The Original Rainbow Cone

Our next recommendation is a Chicago icon and have been featured nearly every year at the Taste of Chicago – Rainbow Cone. The original shop can be found on the south side in the Beverly neighborhood. If you haven’t had a taste of the original rainbow cone, it is made of 5 layers of flavor – chocolate, strawberry, palmer house (vanilla with cherries and walnuts), pistachio and orange sherbet. Yum!

For an easier visit, check out their location at Navy Pier while you’re out and about in Chicago! Click Here for more info.

Scooter’s Frozen Custard

Next up, we travel over to Scooter’s Frozen Custard, “Your Mom & Pop Custard Shop” in Lakeview. Here the owners take pride in their product and also their spot in the community. For a truly neighborhood feel, stop by Scooter’s Frozen Custard and try one of their creative Concretes!

George’s Ice Cream

Lastly, we head over to Andersonville to taste George’s Ice Cream & Sweets! George’s is a favorite neighborhood shop and always has a line out the door and down the block! Here you can enjoy quality ice cream while relaxing with friends and family. As stated on their website, “Nothing fancy, just a welcoming, comfortable atmosphere to gather with old friends or meet some new ones.”
