Your Guide to 4th of July 2014 in Chicago

CroppedFireworks4th of July is already just a little over a week away.  The fourth falls on a Friday, so there’s no excuse to not celebrating the holiday.  Between BBQ’s and family gatherings, here are some other events going on in and around downtown Chicago to help you plan the perfect 4th of July holiday:

FIREWORKS:  You’ll want to watch some fireworks, of course.  Here’s a list of when and where some of the larger firework shows are going off on the fourth.

NAPERVILLE RIBFEST: Naperville’s ribfest is much more than just ribs.  This 4 day festival is an all-day concertl, carnival, and family fun fest with plenty of ribs and other food as well.  This year’s headliners include the BoDeans, Million Dollar Quartet, Roger Hodgson (former lead singer of Supertramp), and George Thorogood & The Destroyers.  Ribfest runs July 3-6th in Knoch Park.  Tickets are available at the gate or online.

DAVE MATTHEWS BAND: Dave and his cult following come to Chicago on July 4th and 5th at FirstMerit Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island.  Show time is 7:00pm.  For tickets, click here.

RIVERWEST  MUSIC FESTIVAL: A new electronic music festival taking place on Division St. just east of 90/94 along the Chicago river July 4, 5, and 6.  See the full artist lineup here.  1 day or 3 day passes available.  Tickets are available here.

INDEPENDENCE DAY SALUTE WITH GRANT PARK ORCHESTRA AND CHORUS: Enjoy an evening at Millennium Park’s Jay Pritzker Pavilion with music filled with the American spirit and the pride and joy of patriotic song.


Lisle Eyes to the Skies Balloon Glow

LISLE EYES TO THE SKIES BALLOON FESTIVAL: Enjoy music, a large carnival, an 100-booth craft fair, special children’s area, food courts, and of course, daily launches of hot air balloons and a balloon glow.  There’s also a 4th of July parade.  This year’s headliners are the Gin Blossoms, Sixteen Candles, and The Trippin Billies.  The festival takes place in Lisle Community Park July 2nd-6th.  Admission is $7, children under 5 a free.  Free parking.

INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF LIFE: Celebrate 4th of July with the 22nd annual African/Caribbean International Festival of Life Thurs July 3rd – Sun July 6th in Union Park.  Enjoy live music by top Reggae and R&B stars as well as a three on three soccer tournament.  Tickets are $20 at the door or $15 when purchased in advance.

TASTE OF LAKEVIEW: See and taste the best of one of Chicago’s iconic neighborhoods, Lakeview.  Featured as one of 2013’s can’t miss street festivals on WGN-TV, this festival is located in the heart of Lakeview at 3200 N. Lincoln Ave. at Belmont.  Suggested admission donation is $5.  Saturday, July 5th 12-10pm and Sunday, July 6th 12-9pm.

WINDY CITY RIBFEST: Not to be outdone by Naperville, Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood will also host a ribfest July 4-6th with live music, an elaborate Kids Zone, and of course, plenty of ribs and other delicious food.
